BITSAT Eligibility Criteria

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) is the required entrance examination for admission into the Integrated First Degree programs (B.E., B.Pharm., and M.Sc. Hons.) offered at the prestigious BITS campuses in Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad. Eligibility for BITSAT is strictly governed by a candidate’s academic performance in their Class 12 board examination.

1. Academic Qualification and Mandatory Subjects

To be eligible, a candidate must have passed or be currently appearing for the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination under the 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State Board.

  • Year of Passing: Candidates must have appeared for the Class 12 exam for the first time in the preceding year or the current year of their BITSAT attempt. For example, if a candidate attempts BITSAT in the current academic year, they must have passed Class 12 either in the current year or the year immediately before it.

  • Essential Subjects: Adequate proficiency in English is also required.

    • For the B.E. and M.Sc. programs, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) are mandatory subjects in the Class 12 examination.

    • For the B.Pharm. program, candidates can qualify with either Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) or Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). However, students applying with the PCB combination must also demonstrate adequate proficiency in Mathematics at the Class 10 level.

2. Minimum Marks Requirement (The 75/60 Rule)

This is the most crucial part of BITSAT eligibility, as candidates must satisfy two separate minimum percentage requirements based on their Class 12 marks:

  1. 75% Aggregate Marks: A minimum of 75% aggregate marks must be secured in the mandatory subjects combined:

    • For B.E. / M.Sc. programs, the aggregate is calculated using marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).

    • For the B.Pharm. program, the aggregate is calculated using marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics (PCB/PCM).

  2. 60% Individual Subject Marks: Candidates must also have scored a minimum of 60% marks in each of the mandatory subjects individually (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology).

  3. It is essential to note that BITS considers both the theory and practical marks of these subjects when calculating the percentages, and there is no rounding off of the final percentage (e.g., 74.9% is not considered 75%).

3. Other Conditions

  • Age Limit: There is no specific upper or lower age limit to appear for BITSAT.

  • Attempts: A candidate can take BITSAT a maximum of once per academic session.

  • Board Toppers: Candidates who secure the first rank in their respective Central or State Board examinations are eligible for direct admission to the course of their choice, provided they still meet the minimum 75% aggregate and 60% individual subject marks criteria.

In summary, meeting the BITSAT eligibility requires strong, consistent performance in the Class 12 exams across all mandatory science subjects, ensuring both a high overall aggregate of 75% and no score dipping below 60% in any individual subject
